June 27, 2010-Happy Birthday Kodman!!!

It is soooooooo FREAKING COLD HERE LIKE WOW!!!! TARTAGAL IS SUPPOSE TO BE A DESERT BUT THE WINTER IS JUST THE OPPOSITE!!!! We work with giant trench coats on and my boots. So while you are all enjoying the perfect California weather, just know 2 giant gringos are knocking doors wearing all black and talking with a funny accent.
THE WORK HERE IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! man these people are so humble and we are working so hard, it is awesome. Before my mission holding a job was hard because it was long and boring but wow when you have a testimony about the only true church on this earth and get the opputunity to share it with people that haven't heard it before, things get so much better. At this time we have 6 baptisms lined up for the next 3 weeks. We have NORMA, CHRISTIAN, DENNIS AND MARIA (there always has to be a Maria otherwise you aren't in Argentina) haha. So, as you can tell-missionary life is PERFECT!!!!
Now that I can understand and talk this language, my diligence meter just went way up. I can understand a language that I didn't even know 4 words 6 months ago. It is amazing, the Lord truly blesses his servants and now I can throw out at least 12 sciptures.
Gosh this gospel is so true and that I know with my entire heart! The members here and the people we teach are just so humble and family orientated. The only 2 problems we have had in this town is that a couple will live together but not be married. They say they are married but in reality they have 4 or more children and have been in the same house for years. Before baptism they either have to marry, which takes forever, or seperate. To be a 20 year old and to tell 2 grown adults they have to move or get married they look at you funny. But the humility and test of faith is so powerful.
We have had 2 families seperate for baptism-they each have 7 kids and have been living together for over 34 years.
It is truly amazing because no matter who you'd tell this to in the states, there is not a chance they would listen to a 20 year old. This has been the biggest topic on my mind lately. I am a servant of the lord Jesus Christ and he speaks through me. These people listen NOT because we have blue eyes and are tall, but because we have a nametag with 3 bold names. The first is ELDER then DARBY then JESUCRISTO!!!! We are here sharing the gospel and the only path to actually receive eternal life and live with our crazy families forever.
Gosh I love this work and it has humbled me in every sitiuation. I am blessed to know this language so quick and to be able to have the desire to study and read the scriptures. I have read the Book of Mormon 2 times on my mission and am in love with the stories and the TRUTH. President monson said "if you don't have a testimony of the Book of Mormon or this church, GET ONE!!!!" This is the promise of the true prophet on this earth. He receives the truth for all of us and if we say we want to follow God and the example of JESUSCHRIST, then we need to follow his messenger!!!!
I leave this with you as a 'challenge' to follow the scriptures and follow the gospel because without this gospel and repentance, we can't receive the celestial kindom.
No inpure thing can enter in the presence of GOD!!! I know this is true and I love you all.
Your Elder. Elder Darby

TARTAGAL transfer 6/20/11

wow TRANSFERRED!!!!!!!!!!! and this week has been my best week yet and it is because of 2 reasons!!!
I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING AND I CAN TEACH ACCORDING TO THEIR NEEDS!!!!
My comp. is shocked I showed up to Tartagal and just had an urge to talk and listen. Since the first lesson in this area, I can now listen to what they say, respond to it and testify with no problem to what they need-it is amazing!!!! I have been strightened up by the spirit and can now rely on the spirit in every lesson to guide me and help me to truly teach from my heart. This is exciting like no other because I now don't go back to the pench and say urrrrr!!! I now go back, get down on my knees and thank my heavenly father for calling me here.
TARTAGAL IS SOOO COOL.!!!!! Just imagine a small village with little wooden gates in front of houses, all sand streets and giant fruit trees everywhere. It is gorgeous!!!! I came from Perico which had money and many paved streets but here, they have not very much money but humility, it is so amazing !!! They are humble here making it so much easier because not one person here slams the door-they actually just about always let us in because they want to chat.
They have cool jeep cars and old old range rovers it is like a town built next to the ocean, with a giant "River" or canal running through it. I love it but only have 6 weeks to learn it so pray for my memory, I will need it. My comp. Elder BJOURKLAN is a beast, this is his last transfer so he is like-elder Darby, we need to work hard hard hard. I am loving him and loving our 2 man apartment up 3 sets of stairs. The bulding is giant and totally cement just like every building here. The best part of this town is the tranquil feeling because they don't have grocery stores or any entertainment whatsoever. They have little kioscos with the essentials and MATE AND FRIENDS. The concept of the family is so cool here, I honestly am following more and more in love with the people here everyday. This last week was great except for not eating healthy.
On Wednesday we bought candy, we had a ton of empanadas and bought milanesa sandwiches that night. Thursday we bought pastries called facturas and ate a ton more of candy-then bought milanesa sandwiches again. Then friday came and we had a giant chicken and papas fritas(french fries). Then Saturday came and we ate locro, which is a huge bowl of soup with thick oyster noodles and a few giant chunks of cow stomach and other meats. The member made us eat 2 giant bowls, it was tough but force feeding is a great talent I have-haha. Then Sunday or EL DIA DEL PADRE fathers day. We had lunch with this giant family and had to eat 30 emapanadas a piece and the best part was a giant peach cake with not whipped cream but thick sugar cream. It was a tough week except on Friday we went to a fruit stand and bought 5 dollars worth of fruit-which here is about 4 safeway bags-haha. It is the only way we have been able to get rid of this unhealthy streak, fruit and gatorade. Gatorade seriously works miracles, the green mango flavor is like opening a bottle of heaven.
I love it here and this morning we took a 2 hour bus ride to go play soccer in Pocitios which is 15 minutes from BOLIVIA!!!! It was awesome and I scored 3 goals. We had the missionaries which was 6 north Americans and 2 latinos and tied 5-5, so yes, I did rep. the Darby name to these latinos. The way these latinos play shows soccer here is so not a pansy sport it is all technics.
I love you all and gave a talk yesterday not in our ward but in our branch, we have about 45 members at church and we had 5 investigators come to church-it was awesome. My talk was great because I know this language and had 3 quotes written and 2 sciptures and talked for 20 minutes without looking at the paper at all. Knowing this language has given me such faith and a trust in the lord that I know we can be those who stay strong and blameless before God in these last days.
We have 4 lessons tonight and have to be back at the apartment by 9:30pm and we are watching the Jose Smith movie with our investigators tonight in spanish and I understand it all. So cool Elder Darby, the elder that couldn't even say anything before his mission has been blessed enough to understand and speak!!! All the members comment on my achievements and on my accent so I am progressing for sure. Thank you all, I love you all so much and can't wait to come back and share the best 2 years-haha.
LOVE ELDER DARBY

6/13/11

Hello again from a new area in Argentina and a new awesome gringo!!!!! I got TRANSFERED TO TARTAGAL!!!!!!! Which is actually less than an hour from Bolivia, so crazy. Perico was so nice having 2 grocery stores and knowing the area-like perfectly. I am now with a sweet comp. and I get to "kill him'!!!!!! This means he 'dies' at the end of this transfer so he is ready to work hard with me to baptize this whole area. Man he is amazing!!!! He has 23 months on his mission and has been district leader twice, along with zone leader, it is so awesome.
Well this morning woke up at 6am, out the door by 7am and my bus left at 8am. The bus ride was 6 and a half hours but I was with a sweet Columbian Elder so I got to practice my spanish a ton with him, it was awesome. We talked for 2 hours-just straight fluent spanish with no problems. This launguage just seems so easy now it is so awesome, what a blessing to be here and already feel pretty comfortable with the launguage.
It was so hard to leave my last area because of the members and my converts though. The last time I cried was when I left you all in California. But yesterday, familia mendez made a giant cake; familia coppas made a giant cake and 3 members bought me red bull energy drinks-haha. No matter where I go the devil still tempts me with those drinks, I swear. Anyway, saying goodbye to the members and to my converts left me and them in tears but when I got on that bus leaving behind elders and all my progress for 4 months, I realized I am ready to move and do this in my next area. This new comp. has a lot of time on his mission but he is so glad I get to take over once he 'DIES'!!!!! and I kill him. This means gifts, gifts and more gifts. When you 'kill an elder' you get first dibbs at everything they don't want so not only do I have to learn this new giant area in one transfer, but I might move up meaning the senior comp. or better yet, district leader. The president in my last interview said I have the potential but it all depends on the new president in July. It would scare me quite a bit to move up but also be such an honor.
Well I have a feeling these members are gonna give me a lot of gifts on my mission and you may ask why? Well, one member has this orange chevelle super sport or SS. hE HAS KEPT IT RUNNING FINE but it needs an owner because he only wants it for 17 more months. He said for me to come back after my mission and I can have the car for free!!!! He also says he will keep it in the same condition when I get back!!!! So awesome, I mean a chevelle SS. so Erik or whoever comes down here with me, we have a car for fishing and racing. It has a 250 in it now and a 4 door and orange, I love it.
I've realized what is important to get along with people and to be a good missionary and that is LOVE!!!!!!! It sounds so simple but when you love like CHRIST DID AND DOES, THINGS ALWAYS GO RIGHT!!! I cried to leave the members because I love them and they loved me. In my time in Perico we reactivated 12 inactive families, baptized 2 and knocked over 350 doors. These are not just numbers because now that we baptized Diego-the whole family of 12 is reactivated and Patricio now is taking his girlfriend to the temple the end of this month to be baptized. Salvation and an eternal family are the 2 things and the 2 biggest gifts. Always be thankful for what you have and where you live because it can be so much worse. Stay strong, love one another and keep me in your prayers. I love you all... the one and only ELDER DARBY

HELLO EVERYBODY I HOPE YOU ALL LOVE THE PICTURES I SENT BECAUSE I WILL ALWAYS KEEP THEM COMING. I hope you all are recieving blessings because man my prayers are like 30 minutes every morning and night for everyone. I hope these emails have been inspiring and uplifting because this mission is truly more than that. This mission so far 6 MONTHS!!!!!!!!! has been so amazing. I am finally having success with speaking spanish and completing the numbers we have to have for the week. But there is one thing that I keep doing that I have always done before my mission and that is....
FISHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We went fishing today at a little pond and boy did we have a blast. I caught a freaking pirahna and kept getting these giant catfish to bend my rod but with a hook about the size of half your fingernail-this is a challenging task. I caught a little pirahna in my hand that actually tried to bite me with these giant teeth. The locals here call them 'diente' which means tooth. Their jaw actually locks together because their giant teeth go into their bottom and top lip, it is so weird. I pulled it out of the water on my lure and was snapping its jaws together really loud. Argentina isn't as poor as it sounds but boy it is just weird. So, all in all, today was an awesome day to go fishing in just perfect weather but it was missing the Monster and beef jerky.
Anyway this last week was quite a normal week. The launguage is becoming way easier and when the launguage comes easier everything else has more of a purpose. I can sit in my own room and have a conversation in spanish with someone it is so cool. It makes every lesson more meaningful meaning days go quicker and the people are more fun to teach. I am working hard and we are doing a lot of work together. We had over 22 new investigators this week which is insanely good and had over 24 baptism dates for the month of June and July.
This week the numbers were so great till sunday. Sunday we had zero investigators in church. With over 20 new people taught you'd think one would show up but nope-not one. It was a tough sacrament but I have a very good chance of being transfered this next monday the 13th to a different area so I was able to bear my testimony in sacrament and break the news. The reactions from these people in the ward were shocking to me. Because I realized the love and respect they have for missionaries. They might not have a car or money or microwaves but they have 2 things; a freaking ton of dogs and love. They seriously have so much love for us elders and they help me so much with this launguage. Always positive and always humble.
This experience has truly changed me so much so far and I am only a quarter through. I am excited every night when I go to bed because I get to wake up and serve these people. I love this mission and I love these people here. They are so supportive and now matter what we need, they always are able to help out.
I feel the love you all have for me and I hope you feel my prayers working in your lives. I hope you realize we do have a Father in Heaven and we need to make him proud of us always. It is one thing to be a member but it is another thing to be a representative of the only true church on this earth. Stay strong everyone because if we don't meet up in the celestial kingdom together it will break my heart.

Baptism Baptism Baptism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAD MY SECOND BAPTISM THIS LAST WEEK AND FELT JUST SO GREAT ABOUT IT.

This week we led the zone in numbers and I am so happy to be able to do that. We had a ton of new investigators, ton of new baptism dates and a ton of lessons; it was so great. I seriously love being on my mission it is the best. I am not sure about "The Best 2 Years" but I hope it can become that good for me because I am loving it here. The launguage is finally just about there, I mean we had a division last week and my comp. told me to teach all the lessons for one day. I did them all, got 10 baptism dates and knocked about 15 doors. So, in one day the spirit blessed me with understanding and now speaking the language. I have never felt so helped in my life.
The baptism this week was for PATRICIO Roberto Martinez. He has a girlfriend and a baby with her but they moved out of the same house so we taught them every lesson and baptized him with honor. I was able to baptize him and this means that was my last baptism in Perico.
This week was so amazing with numbers and the work, had great food-and always leave a note with the members we eat with.
I dont have much time to write today because we are on a tight schedule, the president asked we all email him almost 2 pages about our week so this takes a lot of my time. Just know I love you all so much. One more thing, I actually taught gospel principles class yesterday. I was so nervous but it ended up being such an amazing lesson with tons of great scriptures. The lord and spirit are with me helping me when I fall short. I can feel the power when in a lesson and even though sometimes I will be exhausted, the spirit will give me an urge to speak and I act on the prompting. It is not about doing it myself but rather listening to the spirit when he prompts you. Just the other night an investigator started crying and out of nowhere, I felt to teach the plan of salvation. He looked at me and said fine so I taught her this and after she thanked me cause her cousins husband just died. She called me the next day and told me that she explained that her cousins husband is on the way to heaven and she can see him again so we are gonna go teach her cousin this Thursday. Man, I just love the miracles and the strong spirit that happen!
You are all in my 10 minute prayers in spanish and I know that the lord will help us if we ask with a desire to truly receive an answer. I love you all and I hope you love the Lord because he will always answer your prayers and provide a way.
Once again ELDER DARBY your (son, friend or example)

This past week was about a 8 out of ten till last night because now it is a 10 plus!!!!!!!
So why else was this week a 10-well, we are teaching this guy named Ruben he is just so stubborn and so smart. We have had 4 lessons with him and can't get a baptism date out of him. He has over 20 books of other churches and reads them daily but last night we went to his house 4 times and couldnt reach him. He is the only guy in all of Argentina that actually knows what time we are gonna come back and we were 20 minutes late-so he wasn't there. But after these 4 trys and other lessons in the middle, I said, "hey I know a street we should knock". So we head over to find this one street and the member with us said it is really dangerous, but for some reason I kept insisting and really wanted to knock this street. So finally I convinced my comp and the member to headed over there.
We had time to knock 3 doors so we knocked 3 and nothing but I said one more and I will take it. My comp said we don't have time so I gave him my face and knocked this last door. Be ready for this one, My comp. says go ahead so i knock and sure enough Ruben answers the door!!!! Me and my comp. were shocked, I mean we were easily 13 miles from his house. So we pull him out in the street and end up teaching him but the most amazing part was that we asked him after a long lesson to be baptized and he ACCEPTED IT!!!!
THIS MIRACLE was so amazing to me and the many trys by the devil to stop us from going over. It made me realize I am here serving the Lord in every way and he will always come through. I am so humbled from this experience and my comp as well. I can say it wasn't me who decided to go knock; it wasn't me who thought we truly should, it was the spirit.
The Lord is by my side and he will always be by our side through everything, but the first step is faith. To have faith is to know not to think but to know that your Father in Heaven will help you with what you need. Joseph Smith had it and Satan knew it. Satan tried to stop us 3 times before we saw Ruben and now he has a baptism date and will finally receive the gospel I have fallen in love with.

I love you all and you are all in my prayers stay strong it will pay off, I promise with all my heart THIS CHURCH IS TRUE!!!! THIS IS THE TRUE GOSPEL!!! Well till next week-the always hard working ELDER DARBY
